Light Voids

An experiment with movement as a means to draw an imagined space. The drawing is interpreted through a series of long exposure photographs that evolve into orthographic drawings – the elevation.

For this project, a light tool architectural in nature had to be constructed as a means to manipulate a light source. The light tool designed consisted of string lights running through 2 bright coloured plastic balls. As a result, the tool was able to produce various line weights and colour intensities when captured in movement using long exposure photography.

The space created by spinning the light tool above the head in an infinity sign like motion, whilst also slowly spinning the body around in the same spot. This was intended to imitate the motion of planets and their overlapping orbits in space.

The motion was performed in a dark environment and captured from 4 sides at right angles to each other, essentially capturing and combining all 4 elevations of the space created by the light tool.
